The EMS Expo at the Georgia World Congress Center was a blast for us. Mainly because we got to run our mouths. As usual, I was at the forefront of yapping and got to see the old gang banging about pilfering goodies and buying neat gadgets. We also got a pleasant surprise or two. The first is our introduction to Kip and Doc Aaron. These two gentlemen came to Atlanta by way of some state out west of the Mississippi river and brought mats to tumble on. Rather mats to get thrown around on or cushion…

Well here we are! Russell is now SWAT. Russell spent two weekends of his life pouring sweat into the sands of the range in Whitesburg and the carpets at Morehouse School of Medicine. The course spanned two weekends from 7am to 8pm and had the following high points. Running up a hill, down to the road, back to the range, down two flights of steps, onto the range and firing shots to qualify! Then it was on! Rain was on the agenda for all day and smoking barrels were the solution. Once back at More…

As of writing this, I just spoke with the President of the Paulding Chapter of SORBA, Dave Senecal. There will be a continued series of Mountain Bikers First Aid sponsored by Tangent Edge and SORBA. The clinic will be hosted by REI at various locations through out the metro Atlanta area. The immediate plan however is the mountain bikers search and rescue program. The site has already been picked and the details of the event will be hashed out in the upcoming weeks.

The ground breaking for the trail began at Austell Fire station #2 on April 18, 2009 at 4 PM. The members from SORBA's Paulding Chapter and Tangent Edge began clearing the trail's corridor. Scott Martin is the designer of the trail and remains a constant source of motivation as well as a ball of energy. He is a panel of teeth from ear to ear when ever you speak to him about, well...everything. Scott views himself as "the Clydesdale of the trail". " If you run into me with your bike, you're gonna…

We have been training and moving faster than we can keep up. Many projects are abound, folks are running around, paperwork is stacking up and bullets are flying down range. We would like to thank everybody for their patience and hard work. The Morehouse School of Medicine was a very successful target assessment which gave participants an in depth look at things we normally take for granted. Tangent Edge and Morehouse School of Medicine will be hosting a series of classes in the upcoming months f…

What is the RAGE about? Rage against the machine. Rage against the wind. Rage. We will not go silently into the night.
RAGE is none of the above.
RAGE is a simple acronym for tactical medics to follow in the Care Under Fire phase of the Tactical Combat Casualty Care. We all love acronyms.
R. RBCs instead of ABCs. The number 1 preventable death in a combat environment is blood loss. Every red blood cell that hits the mud reduces the casualty's chance for survival. Red blood cells help to form cl…

I am going to avoid the specifics in order to keep this an open source for those that wish to do the research. There are many arguments to this process but the underlying premise is the current capabilities of cell phone tracking. Cell phones are an immense luxury to us these days from the old standard of landlines. We have swapped security for convenience and for unscrupulous minds; this has been a godsend. What am I talking about? Blackberrys and other smart phones store large volume data in a…

Congratulations to Brandi!! She has made selection for SWAT and is now moving into position to fill the billet of SWAT Medic. I had a chat with and listened while she put forth her action plan. She is doing her research, developing her program and is listening to the needs of her new team. This is the apex of mindset and meeting the needs of her environment. While it is a tremendous task that looms before her, she does have a distinct advantage, there is another Tangent Edge alumni helping her a…

I had a very hard time along with many of our colleagues over what has been a devastating year in the special forces community. The bag pipes played and shortly thereafter, names were called for fallen warriors of the Special Operations Forces (SOF) past and present. Of particular note is to 7th group.
Please remember what it takes to fight this war. The lives that move forward into the fray. The medics that pour their soul into saving fallen friends and comrades. Medics that died doing their j…

Some of you may know, we just came back from Tampa. Adin, Antny, Dr. Martin and myself walked around the sunny shores of St. Pete's beach in shorts, sandals and t-shirts with Christmas lights all aglow. I did my mandatory Yoga practice on the beach and everybody laughed (how can you laugh at the warrior pose?). But I'm old and can outrun most of you cats anyway, so what do I care.
We(cadre) are looking to sport a new James Bondish type of tool courtesy of Dr. Martin. You will be able to see thi…

Hello to all! If there wasn't enough sites to see, there is a Yahoo! group called the Georgia tracking alliance. While this may be an excellent opportunity to develope your skill sets, it may put you into sensory overload. However, if you feel you can power through, you'll have to request to join the group. It looks like they are planning a Mid January outing/class designed for weekend fun. I have yet to attend any of the functions but they seem to be very hard core about tracking. So..."cut som…

NAIROBI, Kenya — Blackwater Worldwide and other private security firms — some with a reputation for being quick on the trigger in Iraq — are joining the battle against pirates plaguing one of the world's most important shipping lanes off the coast of Somalia. The growing interest among merchant fleets to hire their own firepower is encouraged by the U.S. Navy and represents a new and potential lucrative market for security firms scaling back operations in Iraq. But some maritime…

The Tactical Medical Response Initiatives© is developed by Tangent Edge and are guidelines for the civilian and combat medic to incorporate into their training and decision-making process. The medic, in general terms, may find a host of challenges in today's Global War On Terrorism (GWOT). The environment is the determining factor that sets the stage on when, where and how the medic will employ medical skill sets to save lives. This should not be confused with routine medical calls and is indeed…

The OODA Loop is the prevalent rave in the NTOA community with LTC David Grossman. The OODA Loop was a term initially used to define military information strategy for information warfare. Elements of this theory can be adapted to business strategy. The origin of the OODA Loop was first developed by Colonel John Boyd of the United States Air Force to explain victory in aerial combat. In later years, Boyd would expand this theory to reflect a greater strategy in defeating the enemy. This concept i…

4th generation warfare by definition is a guerilla type of attack on media, politics, religion, military, infrastructure, social and economics. The methodologies are numerous and varied in 4th generation warfare and has presented itself as one of the most challeging forms of modern combat. 4th generation warfare or 4GW has added a sense of urgency to the tactical medical community by soliciting asymmetrical responses from the first responders to surgical teams in forward combat areas. Moral warf…
